Can BrowserHawk detect the user's connection speed?
Created: 1/29/2001    Updated: 10/4/2007
Q   Can BrowserHawk detect the user's connection speed?

A   Yes. BrowserHawk accurately measures the connection speed, in bits per second, between the web server running BrowserHawk and the end user's browser.

Note that this is a measure of the actual throughput at the time of the test, not the theoretical maximum speed. This makes the speed detection feature ideal for estimating download times and page load times.

There are also the EstDownloadTimeSec and EstDownloadTimeDesc and methods that, given a file name, will return the estimated download time in seconds or formatted as a string (such as "4 minutes, 17 seconds") based on the file size and user's connection speed.

See the ConnectionSpeed property in the BrowserHawk documentation or the speed.asp sample file included with the BrowserHawk evaluation. You can also test the speed detection for yourself.

As a practical example of this feature, here at cyScape we use the EstDownloadTimeDesc method and speed test to show the visitor how much time it will take to download an evaluation copy of BrowserHawk. If you do not yet have a copy of BrowserHawk, download the evaluation and you can see how this works first-hand. After you fill out the short download form, notice on the next page how it shows you the estimated download times.
