Windows Me not detected as expected
Created: 2/7/2001    Updated: 12/27/2002
Q   When testing under Windows Windows XP or Windows ME, BrowserHawk detects the operating system with some browsers as something other than WinXP and WinMe respectively. Why?

A   Most older browsers (particularly Netscape) running on Windows XP and ME still report themselves as Windows 95 or Windows 98. Likewise, most of these browsers running on Windows XP report themselves as Windows 2000.

As such BrowserHawk picks up on this information and relays it as reported by the browser. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about this because the browser itself does not recognize that it is indeed running on XP or ME.

However, Windows XP and Windows ME can be properly detected with the later versions of IE and Netscape. If you are testing with a recent IE or Netscape browser under Windows XP or ME and it is still being detected as Win95, Win98, or Win2000, be sure to download the latest BDF from cyScape.
