BrowserHawk is returning 4.01 for my IE browser, but when I look under Help->About in IE it shows 4.72 as the detailed version. Why is this?

The 4.72 number it is displaying is the internal build number for the browser, not the actual version of the browser. Build 4.72.2106.8 was for the original release of IE 4.01. Build 4.72.3110.8 was IE 4.01 SP1, and build 4.72.3612.1713 was IE 4.01 SP2.
The version information of 4.01 you are getting from BrowserHawk is correct. IYou can detect the actual build number through the new BrowserBuild property. However this applies only to Windows versions of IE 5 and later.
