Detecting Mac OS X
Created: 2/25/2002    Updated: 9/28/2004
Q   Does Browserhawk have the ability to detect a specific Macintosh OS, such as 9.2 or OS X, or can it only detect if the Mac is a PowerPPC or 68K?

A   In the past it has not been possible to detect the specific version of a Mac OS using BrowserHawk or any other method.

However, starting with BDF 6.02, it has become possible to detect Mac OS X for users surfing with AOL for Mac OS X and users with current Netscape browsers. For these users the Platform property will be set to "MacOSX".

Otherwise the Platform property will indicate the type of Mac platform in use, such as "MacPPC" or "Mac68K".

Starting in 2003 it became possible to detect more users on Mac OSX when running on the Safari browser.

As additional granulairity becomes possible in the future for detection of the Mac OS details, we will continue to update our BDF to reflect this.
