How do the various language properties differ?
Created: 4/15/2002    Updated: 4/15/2002
Q   I noticed there are three properties related to the user's language - Language, LangUser, and LangSystem. How do these properties differ from one another?

A   The Language property is set according the information passed in the HTTP_USER_LANG header variable. This is typically set by the the user to their preferred language.

The LangUser property is set to the language code corresponding to the regional settings for the user, if using IE. Otherwise this returns the language code corresponding to the language build of the browser.

The LangSystem property is available only if the user has IE v4+. In this case, this property is set to the language code corresponding to the language edition of the installed operating system,

Note: You can use CountryHawk to detect the user's country of origin (the country they are surfing from). This is very useful for instantly determining language and currency preferences, among other things.

See these properties in the Property Reference Guide in the Documentation for more information.
