Can I import a license key for a new version of BH without upgrading BH itself at this time?
Created: 10/18/2007    Updated: 10/18/2007
Q   Our annual maintenance for BrowserHawk is up for renewal. However we will not have a chance to install the latest version of BrowserHawk in production for a while.

Can I purchase my renewal and import the new key into my older version of BrowserHawk, and just upgrade BH later when we have an opportunity?

A   Yes. By design BrowserHawk license keys are fully backward compatible. So for instance you can import a license key for BH 11 into BH 10, and BH 10 will accept the key and work with it just fine.

In fact, in that scenario that is exactly what is recommended. This way the cyScape Update Service (or BrowserHawk BDF Service in BH 10.x and earlier) will still download the latest browser definitions from us when they are available.

And further still, when you do eventually install the later version of BH, the key will already be in the system and BH will be ready to go.

Or, if for any reason you are not comfortable changing anything at all in production that is fine too. Just purchase the renewal and hold onto the key until you are ready to upgrade. Just keep in mind that in that scenario the cyScape Update Service will no longer monitor cyScape for browser definition updates and download them when available once the maintenance period in the currently installed key expires.

Please keep in mind that in any event your Support and Maintenance (SAMP) must be renewed by your renewal date or the SAMP will expire. Once expired the only option later is to purchase an upgrade which is much more.
