Does BrowserHawk require the web browser to have a Java VM and applets enabled for your browser detection system to work. Are any applets or ActiveX controls streamed down to the user on first use?

No. BrowserHawk does not require any JVM, applets, or ActiveX controls to be installed on the browser in order to detect the browser and all of its settings, with one exception.
The JavaVendor, JavaVersion, MSJVMBuild, and Plugin_JavaVer properties do require a tiny applet (1KB) be sent to the browser. If you do not specifically ask BrowserHawk to test those properties, than this applet is not sent to the browser.
Therefore, provided you do not wish to check the above mentioned properties, then BrowserHawk will not send any applets or ActiveX controls. All tests are unobstrusive and transparent to your site visitor.
